Lathrop to be next Enterprise mayor

ENTERPRISE — Cody Lathrop polled nearly twice the votes of his nearest competitor Tuesday, Nov. 5, to become the next mayor of Enterprise.

He will be sworn in during the first City Council meeting in January.

The final count as released by county Clerk Sandy Lathrop was 723 for Lathrop, 366 for Stirling Webb and 28 for Daniel Sticks. Three votes went to write-in candidates.

Lathrop, a history teacher and football coach at Enterprise High School, will replace Ashley Sullivan, who stepped down as mayor earlier this year. Since then, the position has been filled by council President Jeff Yanke, who won reelection to Council Seat No. 5.

Lathrop spoke highly of his opponents in the mayoral race.

“My competitors are both great people,” he said. “I hope they both strive to help the community.”

He confessed to some Election Day jitters.

“I’m not going to say I wasn’t nervous the whole day,” he said, adding that now that it’s over, he has to get to work on lesson planning for his students.

As he thinks about what he wants to do as mayor, much of it will be about getting input from the City Council and staff.

“I want to get a vision and a direction to provide leadership with the council,” he said. “I want input from the council and their constituents.

He even has a new idea to get public input.

“I want to set up a weekly town hall,” he said. “We’ll sit down and focus on the issues our community is interested it. … No. 1 is to listen.”

Sticka said that when he first filed for office, no one else was running and he was interested in filling what otherwise would be a vacant office. He said he sees the volunteer position of mayor as not unlike much of what he does anyway.

He wasn’t too let down by the electoral loss. It largely leaves him in the position he was in before running.

“I’m good either way,” he said. “I’ll continue to volunteer. That’s what I do.”

Local business owner Webb was not available for comment late Tuesday.

Also elected in Enterprise were Jim Dickenson to Council Seat No. 4, replacing incumbent Brandon Miller. Rick Freeman was reelected to Council Seat No. 6. Each of the councilors faced no official opposition and only an handful of write-in votes were cast for each.
