Municipal races around Grant County take shape

GRANT COUNTY — Voters in four Grant County cities cast ballots in contested city council elections while one mayor beat back a write-in campaign in the 2024 general election.
Prairie City
Prairie City saw the only contested mayoral race in the county as incumbent Ed Clark turned away a strong write-in campaign from Colin Kolb. In unofficial results Nov. 5, Clark was defeating Kolb 287 to 171 to remain the city’s mayor.
Four candidates battled for three city council seats up for election this cycle. In unofficial results, Danner Davis received the most votes of the four candidates up for election, picking up 343 votes.
The three remaining candidates were all within 20 votes of one another, with Scott Clark having 297 votes, Amanda R. Whale-Murphy 284 and Georgia Patterson 279 in unofficial results.
The top three vote-getters in the Prairie City Council race will each serve a four-year term on the council.
Mt. Vernon
Four candidates were jockeying for two city council seats in Mt. Vernon’s city council race.
In unofficial results, Judi Bennett gained the most votes with 185. Flora Cheadle also appeared poised to ascend to a council seat, amassing 128 votes.
Andrew “Drew” Johnson was running third with 100 votes, and Ken E. Douglas was in fourth place with 79 votes.
Bennett and Cheadle will both serve four-year terms on the Mt. Vernon City Council.
Long Creek
Long Creek saw a pair of one-on-one races to fill its two council openings.
In the race for Position 1, Warren Dunn was defeating Long Creek Mercantile owner Dan Kreamier by a margin of 61 votes to 38 votes in early unofficial returns. In Position 2, David Hines was outpolling Leslie Barnett by 71 votes to 32.
Both Dunn and Hines will serve four-year terms on the Long Creek City Council.
Seneca
In Seneca, three candidates were competing for two city council seats.
Andrea R. Officer was leading the trio with 88 votes in unofficial results, followed by Charles “Chuck” White with 50 votes.
Linda Pace appeared to be out of the running with 39 votes.
Officer and White will serve four-year terms on the Seneca City Council.
