MEACHAM — A ranger will lead a free First Day Hike on New Year’s Day at Emigrant Springs State Park near Meacham.

It’s one of 37 guided hikes at Oregon state parks on the first day of 2025, and the only one in Northeastern Oregon.

“First Day Hikes has become a fun tradition for both visitors and staff on New Year’s Day,” said Lisa Sumption, director of Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. “Rangers and volunteers get a chance to share park history, geology, wildlife and plants, and visitors get to experience an adventure with friends and family to start the new year.”

The Emigrant Springs event will be a snowshoe excursion, and a limited number of snowshoes will be available.

The walk will start around 10 a.m. The pace will be slow to moderate on gentle terrain, and the hike will cover 1 to 2 miles and last about 90 minutes, according to the parks department.

People planning to participate should wear warm hiking or snow boots and bring multiple layers of clothing, as well as a hat and gloves. Hikers are encouraged to bring warm drinks as well.

Emigrant Springs State Park is just off Interstate 84, and the exit is marked by a sign. After entering the main entrance to the park, turn left and look for the orange cones and sign that will be posted in the main parking lot across from the registration kiosk. Park staff will be on site to help with parking and getting people fitted with snowshoes if needed.

Dogs are welcome to join but must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet.

Due to the terrain and conditions, the hike is not suitable for people in wheelchairs.

Because some hikers might need to borrow snowshoes, the parks department is asking people to register for the Emigrant Springs hike. You can find a list of free New Year’s Day hikes statewide at bit.ly/4ggunx2.
