Pasco woman dies in crash near Hermiston

HERMISTON— A head-on crash March 4 near Hermiston seriously injured one person and left another dead.

Oregon State Police reported Celestino Chavarria Nunez, 65, of Pasco, was driving a silver Buick Lacrosse on Highway 395 south near milepost 12. As Nunez turned the Buick left onto the Interstate 84 on-ramp, the car hit head-on with a northbound red Toyota CHR.

According to OSP, Nunez was traveling with three passengers, all from Pasco. He and passenger J. Eleazar Flores, 59, suffered minor injuries, and were taken at an area hospital.

Guadalupe Flores-Mendoza, 81, suffered serious injuries and was taken to an area hospital. Passenger Rosa Maria Badillo, 74, died at the scene.

Tabitha J. Ritzer, 41, of Hermiston, was driving the Toyota. She and a 10-year-old girl suffered minor injuries and were taken to an area hospital.

The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, Stanfield Police Department, Lift Flight, Echo Fire, Umatilla County Fire District No. 1 and the Oregon Department of Transportation also responded to the crash, which affected traffic on the highway for three hours during the on-scene investigation.
