First Run slated for Saturday

The Hermiston High School cross country program has the perfect way for people to start their New Year’s resolutions off on the right foot: the 2011 First Run.
The races – a kids 1-mile run, a 2-mile run and a 5K – will be held Saturday, with the starting line at Kennison Field. All of the proceeds from the race will go toward supporting the HHS cross country programs, and coach Jake Puzey stressed that there are still plenty of open spots in all of the races.
“The race keeps growing a little bit every year,” Puzey said. “We want as many people as possible to get involved, and we’re inviting everyone in the community.”
Last year, approximately 150 people took part.
The kids race begins at 9:30 a.m.; with the 2-mile and 5K races set to start at 10 a.m.
Race-day registration and packet pickup will begin at 8:45 a.m. in the “old” commons area adjacent to the HHS gymnasium. The registration fee is $15.
After the races, the awards ceremony and a raffle will be held in the commons area, and light refreshments will be available.
“We want people to know that with this event, every cent goes back into the cross country programs,” Puzey said. “The kids really appreciate what the community does.”
